Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatment is a unique cosmetic procedure that uses light energy pulses to regenerate facial skin. It addresses various skin concerns, such as age spots, black spots, sun spots, brown spots, and acne scars, without the need for surgery or other invasive treatments.
However, in order to get the best results from the procedure, the recovery phase must go smoothly as your skin heals. So in this blog, we’ll go through the things you should do and also the ones you should avoid while the IPL treatment works its magic on your skin.

What To DO Immediately After an IPL Treatment
Right after your IPL session, the goal is to soothe, protect, and support your skin’s natural healing. Begin by gently cleansing with a mild, fragrance-free cleanser and applying a calming, hydrating moisturizer twice daily. Make sunscreen your best friend: choose a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher and reapply if you’re outdoors. Keep your skin well-hydrated by drinking plenty of water, and after a few days, you may gradually reintroduce antioxidant serums (like vitamin C) if your provider approves, to enhance results and promote even tone.
If you experience warmth, redness, or mild swelling, apply a cold compress using a soft, clean cloth for short intervals—this helps calm inflammation without shocking the skin. For itchiness or histamine reactions (like puffiness or tingling), an oral antihistamine such as cetirizine or loratadine can bring relief. Always follow your physician’s guidance, and monitor your skin for any unusual reactions. The more intentional and gentle your aftercare, the better your results.
What NOT to do After an IPL Photofacial
Resist the urge to touch, pick, or scratch your skin—even if dark spots start to flake or peel. This shedding is normal and should happen on its own. Forcing it off can lead to scarring, hyperpigmentation, or even infection. Also, avoid exfoliating products, scrubs, or cleansing tools until your skin is fully healed.
Stay away from direct sun exposure, tanning beds, and self-tanners for at least a week (preferably longer). Your skin is photosensitive post-treatment, and UV rays can cause serious pigmentation issues. Avoid harsh skincare products containing retinoids, AHAs/BHAs, benzoyl peroxide, or alcohol—they’ll only irritate and compromise healing. Steer clear of saunas, hot showers, steam rooms, and intense workouts for the first 24–48 hours, since heat and sweat can worsen inflammation. Patience and gentle care are key.
