IPL Aftercare: Dos and Don’ts After Intense Pulse Light Treatments

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatment is a unique cosmetic procedure that uses light energy pulses to regenerate facial skin. It addresses various skin concerns, such as age spots, black spots, sun spots, brown spots, and acne scars, without the need for surgery or other invasive treatments.

However, in order to get the best results from the procedure, the recovery phase must go smoothly as your skin heals. So in this blog, we’ll go through the things you should do and also the ones you should avoid while the IPL treatment works its magic on your skin.

Care after IPL is very important for getting the best results.

What To DO Immediately After an IPL Treatment

Right after your IPL session, the goal is to soothe, protect, and support your skin’s natural healing. Begin by gently cleansing with a mild, fragrance-free cleanser and applying a calming, hydrating moisturizer twice daily. Make sunscreen your best friend: choose a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher and reapply if you’re outdoors. Keep your skin well-hydrated by drinking plenty of water, and after a few days, you may gradually reintroduce antioxidant serums (like vitamin C) if your provider approves, to enhance results and promote even tone.

If you experience warmth, redness, or mild swelling, apply a cold compress using a soft, clean cloth for short intervals—this helps calm inflammation without shocking the skin. For itchiness or histamine reactions (like puffiness or tingling), an oral antihistamine such as cetirizine or loratadine can bring relief. Always follow your physician’s guidance, and monitor your skin for any unusual reactions. The more intentional and gentle your aftercare, the better your results.

What NOT to do After an IPL Photofacial

Resist the urge to touch, pick, or scratch your skin—even if dark spots start to flake or peel. This shedding is normal and should happen on its own. Forcing it off can lead to scarring, hyperpigmentation, or even infection. Also, avoid exfoliating products, scrubs, or cleansing tools until your skin is fully healed.

Stay away from direct sun exposure, tanning beds, and self-tanners for at least a week (preferably longer). Your skin is photosensitive post-treatment, and UV rays can cause serious pigmentation issues. Avoid harsh skincare products containing retinoids, AHAs/BHAs, benzoyl peroxide, or alcohol—they’ll only irritate and compromise healing. Steer clear of saunas, hot showers, steam rooms, and intense workouts for the first 24–48 hours, since heat and sweat can worsen inflammation. Patience and gentle care are key.

Photofacial Aftercare FAQs

Can You Wear Makeup After IPL?

Yes, but only after 24 hours. Immediately applying makeup post-IPL may irritate sensitive skin or clog pores, increasing the risk of infection. Waiting a full day allows the treated area to heal and reduces potential complications. After that time, you can apply makeup gently, ensuring it doesn’t interfere with your skin’s recovery. Opt for non-comedogenic products and avoid heavy or oil-based formulas to minimize irritation and promote faster healing.

Can You Exercise After IPL?

No, doing so isn’t recommended for at least five days. Vigorous exercise and activities like hot yoga increase blood flow and sweating, which can exacerbate redness, swelling, or irritation on sensitive skin. Sweating can also introduce bacteria to the treated area, raising the risk of infection. During this time, prioritize gentle recovery practices to support healing and avoid activities that might prolong sensitivity or compromise your results. Once healed, you can resume your normal workout routine.

Can You Drink Alcohol After IPL Treatment?

No, avoid alcohol for at least two days. Alcohol increases blood flow, which can worsen redness and swelling in the treated areas. Additionally, its dehydrating effects can slow the healing process and leave the skin feeling more irritated. Steering clear of alcohol gives your skin the chance to recover properly and reduces the risk of prolonging sensitivity. For optimal results, prioritize hydration and gentle care in the days following your IPL treatment.

How Long After IPL Can I Use Retinol?

You should wait for at least one week. Retinol and similar potent skincare ingredients can be too harsh for skin recovering from IPL treatment. Applying retinol prematurely may cause irritation or mild redness or slow down the healing process. Give your skin time to rebuild its natural barrier before reintroducing these products. After one week, gradually reintroduce retinol into your routine, starting with lower concentrations to ensure your skin tolerates it well and heals effectively.

How Long After IPL Can I Go in the Sun?

Avoid sun exposure for at least five days. IPL treatments increase your skin’s sensitivity to UV rays, making it more prone to sun damage, hyperpigmentation, and irritation. Protect your skin by wearing a broad-spectrum sunscreen with high SPF, even when indoors if near windows, and seek shade whenever possible. After five days, continue practicing diligent sun protection to maintain the benefits of the treatment and safeguard your skin from harmful UV rays.

Can You Shower After IPL?

Yes, but avoid hot showers for the first 24 to 48 hours. Hot water can irritate sensitive skin, causing redness, swelling, or prolonged sensitivity. Instead, opt for lukewarm water and use gentle cleansers to clean the treated area without causing discomfort. Avoid scrubbing or applying pressure to the skin to allow for proper healing. Pat the skin dry with a soft towel and apply a gentle moisturizer to keep it hydrated and promote recovery.
